I think of myself as a heavy Firefox user. I use the latest version of the browser (3.6.8) and a preview version of Firefox 4 with a different profile for testing and evaluating purposes. I have always opened two stable versions of Firefox with two different profiles at the same time (by using the -no-remote directive when running it). In my primary profile there’s arround 100 tabs open at any time, in my secondary profile I have around 10 tabs open. My profile has 40 add-ons installed.

At the same time I use Google Chrome also, mainly for evyluating it, but more and more often for playing Youtube videos and incognito mode. I am not a Chrome power user (yet) – there are still some important issues with Google Chrome, mainly based on system hogging.

Today I have checked the memory usage of all my opened browsers. My primary Firefox (with 100 opened tabs) uses around 800 kb, my secondary Firefox around 150 kb, and each Chrome process between 7 kb and 70 kb. I have 5 tabs open, but the number of Chrome processes is 13, probably because of the plugins. The top 5 processes (that I think are tabs) use between 30 kb and 70 kb.

I made a short calculation which I think is correct: If I open 100 tabs in Chrome, they would use up between 3 GB and 7 GB of memory. Compared to 800 kb in Firefox I conclude that Firefox in more memory efficient than Google Chrome for a large number of simultaneously opened tabs.

I think the difference is too big and is probably the reason why I find Chrome hogging my system.

I was thinking if I should take my notebook with me on my vacations. I have seen that the internet is available (wireless in the hotel lobby and in the cafes) for free, so it should be a good thing to take my notebook with me. Except – would this still be a vacation? Would I rest as much as without it? Would I just take a look at the mails, at what is going on in the world, at what’s new with my friends? Or is it better that I unplug myself for a week and try to get my strength back, maybe get a new idea or two and start working after the holidays full of enthusiasm and superpowers?

If I had a Kindle (but I don’t yet) or a device that was still not invented I would probably take them with me. Would that make my holiday a working holiday? Probably, which means that these devices should be taken to holidays with a great responsibility and self control – or holidays become just working from abroad.

Maybe this isn’t true for everyone, but it sure is for workaholics and people that are under a lot of stress and are on their way to get burnt-out. Don’t do it, use your holiday for resting.

Which reminds me of my mobile smart phone: it has wifi, it has e-mail, it has a browser. I wonder what can happen with my holidays. For once, it’s a good thing that the screen is small and the battery doesn’t last long.

I have called it “Fast Books”, because the shipping is fast, and of course, similar as with Books online purchase book store, delivery is free for all EU countries.

I have kept the design of Bestseller book store and most of its functionalities. Also, the order process is the same as with both other book stores. Please take a look at Fast Books book store to find cheap books with free delivery that will be shipped to you fast.

When Mr. Takei in Heros sat in his limo, the registration plate read NCC 1701, which is also the registration number of the starship USS Enterprise from Star Trek. I find this gesture great and among other things fell that Heros is a better TV show because of that.

I own an original EEE computer and I have a newer version of EEE in my household. I have two full size laptops and one desktop computer (with pretty cool two screens). I also have a Synology home server for my basic development and hosting and since more than a year I have an Android powered mobile smart phone. I am considering buying a new Kindle for reading books.

With seven computers or computer like devices in my small home and hopefully one more on the way I still miss a device. It’s not that I know what I miss, the problem is that this should be a new type of device which I haven’t seen yet.

The device I miss is most similar to an iPad or Kindle or my Android mobile phone. I would have to be able to take it anywhere with me, so:

it should weigh less than 400 grams (like Kindle or smartphone)

it should not be expensive so that I don’t leave it at home because I’m afraid to scratch it, lose it, break it or be afraid that somebody will stole it from me (like Kindle or my first EEE)

I should be able to use anywhere, so:

it should not be hot or even warm when being used (like smartphone – or Kindle I hope)

it should not make any noise when being used (like smartphone or marginally like my first EEE – or Kindle I hope)

the battery should work for days or weeks (like Kindle or marginally my newer EEE)

It should be useful for work, so:

it should have a file system that I could use to exchange files, have full browser, use FTP and maybe even VNC to other machines (like desktop computers, laptops or EEEs)

it should have an internet connection (like any of those devices has)

it should have a keyboard (like my desktops, laptops or EEEs, marginally Kindle)

As you see in my list of demands for my new device there are quite some things that are missing for each of the devices I own. Right now the odds are looking good for Kindle, but maybe the reason for this is just because I am excited and still don’t have it here to test it.

The main reason I miss this device now is because I’m chained to my bed for a week because of a minor accident and would still love to stay connected / read / work / put the thoughts out of my head / explore without the limitations like too heavy device, no real keyboard, warn lap and short battery time.

I hope the new device will find the way to me soon!

I have written about the new Kindle some days ago; I have almost bought it three times:

1. When I first saw it and discovered that the prices have dropped to $139 if without 3G module (which I don’t need). That time I didn’t buy it because I wanted to look at the competition and their offers and because it ships on Aug 27th and not right away.

2. When I decided that I can wait one month without Kindle and face the fact that it will arrive too late for taking it with me on vacation. I didn’t buy it because the shipment date changed from solid August 27th to somewhere around September 4th.

3. When I decided to reserve it before the shipment date changes again. I also heard that I can cancel any time before the order ships without any costs. I didn’t buy it (I was close this time!) not because the shipment date has moved to September 8th, but because the total price of Kindle, EU charger and shipment to Slovenia would cost me more that $170. This would not be the final price though; I would still have to add the costs of import duties, import handing and possibly tax.

This way Kindle wouldn’t cost me $139 but 130 EUR plus import duties, handling and tax which could increase to170 EUR ($220).

I’m not sure yet if this price is still reasonable for me. At the beginning of the year I wrote in my Slovenian blog that the price for e-ink or e-paper reader would be reasonable at 80 EUR ($105).

I hope I’ll have more luck (or courage) next time I decide to order; I still have enough time to September 8th (or longer if I wait more).

After some quite successful preview releases of Firefox 4.0 the brand new version beta4 preview is here. I have written a few words about beta1 and beta2pre, I have skipped beta3pre because I found no speed improvements but now I’m ready to share my thoughts on beta4pre. Have in mind that this is a preview release of a beta and that there is beta3 that is currently the latest non-preview build.

The speed measured with Sunspider test of beta4pre is similar to that in beta2pre. It looks like that the speed of javascript in Firefox is not improving anymore through versions. It is still slower than Chrome – I have hoped that Mozilla team will be able to overcome guys at Google, but it looks that that’s not just possible yet.

On the Mozilla’s showcase site there are some quite remarkable demos though. It looks like with the new browser I will start missing a real graphic card (instead of the one that is on my motherboard now) because they are all starting to use hardware acceleration for videos and graphics. The demos show mainly new HTML5 video features, plus some CSS3 and other interesting stuff. Check it out!

I have found out today that Amazon’s e-book reader Kindle is out of stock. Recently they’ve dropped prices to $189 and apparently sold out all the basic models. It’s still possible to buy Kinde DX, a model with a larger screen.

I decided to visit Amazon’s site and see for myself. I was surprised when I found out the reason why the Kindles were sold out: they’re releasing a new version of Kindle which is smaller, offers more storage, the battery lasts longer and is faster for better reading experience. This is great, except that they’re starting to ship the new Kindles no earlier than on August 27th – which means that you can pre-order now and receive it a month later. The price of the new model stays the same at $189 plus post and packaging and customs if you live outside US like I do.

There was another pleasant surprise waiting for me: there is another version of Kindle available now that does not include 3G module and comes without 3G subscription. The new Kindles have Wi-fi access so 3G is not really needed if you have access to Wi-fi spot (for example at home) and if you control your life and can decide what you want to read before going to vacation. The price of this model is even lower at $139. This makes me want to buy Kindle now – and wait for a month before it’s here.

I’d love to test the new Kindle on holidays, but it looks like I’ll have to do just fine with old style regular paper books this year. The upside here is that I run an online bookshop and another Slovenian one so I can buy cheap (paper) books there. I sell eBooks as well, but without the reader they’re not much help. Well, maybe I should start selling an e-book reader as well.

I have registered some Slovenian domain names (these are the domain s ending with .si). I have had some before, now I have bought some because of their good names to put relevant sites on them.

These are the domains that I have owned before:

mihov.si – My companies main web site.

imenik-domen.si – Domain names directory front pages.

shareware.si – A shareware directory to-be, but still populated with my own software.

spletnih-strani.si – I use this for promoting my companies services, for example imenik.spletnih-strani.si for a web directory, optimizacija.spletnih-strani.si for SEO services, izdelava.spletnih-strani.si for web development services and some more.

iSEO.si – A promotional site for my SEO services.

bestseller.si – A Slovenian book store that I have created and am still marketing it to become widely popular.

The new domains that have in my opinion interesting names are not fully set up yet. I am still researching the content I will put on them and publish them publicly:

sky.si – This domain was used for setting up the Bestseller site as a testing and proof of concept domain.

bea.si – I will use this domain name for setting up a Slovenian tourist information page about the interesting locations in Europe.

loan.si – Still has no content.

submit.si – This will be a site with a paying high-class sites directory, where my customers and their services will get published at the beginning, then it will slowly open for public.

mexx.si – This ia site about Mexico, Mexican food in Slovenia and Mexico related travel.

What so you think about my domain names and my services? In which direction so you think I should expand them?

If you’re interested in Slovenian domain names take a look at the Slovenian domain names directory that I run.

For quite some time now I’ve had a wish to use a simple wiki for some of my sites. I think the wiki concert is great and it proved in practice as well. When I was travelling to China in 2006 I’ve set up a simple wiki (RoWiki by Marc Rohlfing) on my home server to stay in contact with home. I wanted to achieve that I don’t have to write e-mails to each and everyone interested, but also stay in contact with things at home. That’s why wiki technology was perfect for my needs. I chose RoWiki because it was based on PHP, it had only one file and it used file system to save data. It wasn’t perfect, but it had everything I needed. The thing worked like a charm, everything went ok and I didn’t spend too much time on line but everyone could know where I was (and vice versa).

When I returned from my trip I received several more requests to set up similar sites for travel notes for my friends. In the mean time I have also added some functionalities to RoWiki that I thought were missing, above all connected to formatting and display of Slovenian characters.

RoWiki is not developed any more, which I regret. It’s still available for download on the Maintained by no one site. There were some tries to add it to Google Code as R1Wiki (the page seems to be 403 forbidden now, I don’t know the reason for this), there are many versions of a wiki that evolved from it (TigerWiki, LionWiki, WiiKiss,…), but in my opinion RoWiki (with my additions included, of course was the greatest.

In one of the next posts I’ll explain how I chose my wiki now, after several years and with additional request in mind, including privacy, SEO and simplicity.
