New version of New PC Studio (NPS)
In one of my previous articles I described how to upgrade the firmware of a Samsung Galaxy. I am checking for new firmware updates regularly and this time I have discovered that there is a new version of Samsung New PC Studio, also called NPS, released. The new version is 1.4.0 IL5 – the version I used to have and did not show any new updates was 1.4.0 IL2. How to get this version – as always with the Samsung website, there was a trick.
When navigating to the regular NPS update site the version offered for download was 1.4.0 IL2 – the one, that I already had. Usually the “Download NPS” button leads to the fresher version, but not this time. This time I had to select the “Mobile Phone model” from the list, where I selected “Galaxy”. The function of the “Download NPS” button has not changed – it still lead to the old version. The trick was to click the “Software” link, where there were two versions of the NPS listed. One is NPS version 1.0 (probably for compatibility reasons?), the other one is NPS version 1.4.0 IL5. I have clicked the download icon and have downloaded it successfully. It seems really to be a new version.
If the trick above doesn’t work for you here is a direct link to the download: NPS 1.4.0. IL5
I am installing this version right now and it seems that this version has an auto updater that runs every time the program start. I hope this will clear the mist around the latest versions of NPS and the question how to get them.

My Samsung Galaxy still runs on Android 1.5
Recently I wrote about the Android 1.6 update for Samsung Galaxy being released. Every week I follow the step-by-step instructions on how to upgrade the Samsung’s firmware but I still don’t have the 1.6 update.
I guess I still have to wait some time to get it.

100% CPU bug in Firefox 3.6.3 solved
A few days ago I upgraded Firefox to the new 3.6.3 version. When an update is ready, I usually update right away. In some cases I even install a release candidate, pre-release, beta or alpha versions. I also always use the same user profile that I carry with me since before Firefox – since Mozilla M16 (milestone 16) back in 2000. I believe that my profile carries a lot of junk in it since all the version changes and upgrades. I’ve had some problems related to that in the past, but this time it was different.
This time a weird (but seen before a few times) bug happened: after some time Firefox used all 100% time of one of the cores of my CPU. At that time FF was frozen and didn’t respond. After some time (10 second, 30 second, or a minute or more) the program was responsive again. In some cases the 100% CPU lasted until I killed the process and reloaded the program. I’ve read some posts and they all talked about some AV add-ons. I don’t use antivirus software so that couldn’t be it. After some trying I figured out that it was an add-on that was guilty of the bug: it was Dust-Me Selectors that is used for cleaning up the CSS. I disabled it, but it turned out that it wasn’t enough. I had to remove it completely and now the problem is gone.
When the bug was still present I figured out that a browser is so important to my work that I’ve started to think about trying out Opera. Let me mention here that I have only once used another browser as my first browser: it was in the nineties when I used the Mosaic. I’ve had problems with it so I soon replaced it with Netscape 1.0. I am using Netscape / Mozilla / Firefox browsers since.
